THE ASSASSIN MOVED through the park with the greatest of ease. After his room had been searched, he had done a few dozen laps through the hotel pool. Brisk and refreshing, and a good chance for anyone watching him to have a nice long look about how calm he was.

Not that he was overly paranoid or anything.

After that, he had dressed in light khaki pants, white shirt and a sports jacket, and neat white shoes. If he were any more terribly average, he would make the teeth of anyone who looked at him hurt.

Over one shoulder, he had a duffel bag, and made certain to pull things out of it in a highly-monitored area.

And his first stop—the big black castle across from his hotel.

Watson had paused about thirty yards from it, looking straight up at the big black monstrosity. If it had been built by medieval engineers, it would have taken centuries. It had to be easily thirty stories tall.

John smiled and pulled out his camera, directly in front of the castle security guards. He shot off half a dozen shots, then pulled the camera away so he could take a look at how they looked.

And found himself surrounded by a dozen guards, armed with automatic laser rifles.

Renar assault weapons? What the Hell? He glanced over the Vigiles troopers and had to fight a smile. Nice Polish firing squad, morons.

“What are you doing taking photos of the castle?”

Watson blinked innocently. “I can't take photos? I thought we could take photos anywhere.” He blinked again, then slung his duffel around so it dangled against his chest, and unzipped the bag. All of the guards raised the weapons to their shoulders, and he had to fight every urge in his body so he could pretend that he didn't notice any of them.

Watson pulled out a brochure of the park and kept staring down, from the bag to the brochure, still pretending that he didn't even notice the guns.

“It says right here,” he said, jabbing the brochure with his finger. “‘Cameras are permitted everywhere the guests are.’ Well, I'm on the sidewalk, and so’s the castle, and I—” Watson's indignant arguments abruptly ceased as he stared down the barrels of the assault lasers. “What's the matter?”

One of them wavered, then smiled and said, “You can't take pictures just now. We're making improvements to the area, and—”

The Vigiles was cut off by a monstrous stomp that shook the ground. A roaring shriek split the air as a great black claw came out and hooked around the edge of the dry moat. Following it up was a black, looming creature that looked like an armored dinosaur. It got up on its two taloned feet, and stood, reaching up six stories into the sky, and then coughed green flame into the air.

Watson blinked, and kept his finger on the camera button, holding it down the entire time. “Wow, a dragon. Cool.”

The Vigile smiled. “Yes, and now you see why. We'd hate for anything to show up on the MyVid network before the opening.
